3. Confirm Pressure and Vacuum Conditions

“Working pressure” is not enough for responsible sight glass selection. A complete specification should include:

  • normal operating pressure;

  • pressure surges or pulsation;

4. Specify Temperature and Thermal Cycling

List the minimum, normal, and maximum product temperatures, but also include cleaning, steaming, sterilization, or defrosting conditions. A sight glass may operate normally at a moderate process temperature and still experience a severe thermal event when hot cleaning liquid reaches a cold window.

Rapid temperature change can create thermal stress even within the nominal temperature range. Heating and cooling rate, cycle frequency, and cold wash water all matter.

Some fused glass-to-metal products have specific heat-up and cool-down limits. Follow the instructions for the exact model, and show nearby insulation or heat sources on the drawing.

5. Define the Tank Connection Completely

Nominal size alone does not identify an interface. Two parts marked with the same DN or inch size may use different flange standards, clamp ferrules, sealing faces, bolt circles, neck diameters, or tube dimensions.

For an accurate quotation, provide:

  • the connection type: clamp, union, flange, weld-on, threaded, or custom;
  • the applicable standard and pressure class, where relevant;
  • all mating dimensions;
  • tank-wall or nozzle details;
  • orientation and available installation space; and
  • a drawing, 3D model, or clear dimensioned photograph for replacement work.

For a replacement unit, measure the mating interface and sealing face. A removed sample can help when the original standard is unknown.

6. Select the Metal Material and Surface Finish

Stainless steel 304 and 316L are common starting points, but the correct choice depends on the medium, cleaning chemistry, chloride exposure, temperature, and customer specification. Also identify which surfaces are wetted by the process and which are external only.

For hygienic equipment, surface finish is a functional requirement rather than a cosmetic preference. State the required roughness, the surfaces to which it applies, the polishing direction if relevant, and whether inspection records are required. Avoid vague terms such as “mirror finish” when a measurable specification is needed.

7. Choose the Window Construction and Clear Viewing Area

Evaluate the transparent window as part of the complete assembly. Confirm the glass grade, clear viewing diameter, thickness, support geometry, edge protection, and whether the product needs a mechanically sealed or fused glass-to-metal construction.

Fused designs can provide a compact, flush process-contact surface with fewer ledges, which may be useful when cleanability and reduced internal dead space are priorities. Mechanically assembled designs can offer other advantages in standardization, maintenance, or replacement. Neither construction is universally better; the decision depends on pressure, temperature cycling, cleaning, dimensions, and maintenance strategy.

Ask the supplier to identify the actual clear aperture. This is the usable transparent area after the frame and seals are installed—not simply the nominal connection size.

8. Match the Gasket and Seal to the Process

The gasket is a small component with a large effect on reliability. Specify its material, whether it contacts the process, the expected temperature range, cleaning chemicals, compression arrangement, and any regulatory or customer documentation required.

PTFE, EPDM, silicone, FKM, and other seals have different chemical, temperature, and cleanliness characteristics. Grade, formulation, and service conditions still need confirmation.

Uneven tightening, hard contact against glass, damaged sealing surfaces, or an incorrect profile can create concentrated stress and leakage. Follow the installation method for the exact assembly.

9. Describe Cleaning, External Conditions, and Lighting

The final parameter group concerns everything around the vessel. Tell the supplier whether the sight glass will be exposed to manual cleaning, high-pressure washdown, CIP or SIP cycles, outdoor weather, vibration, dust, corrosive atmosphere, or frequent operator contact.
